Healthy learning conditions for education have been advocated by NZEI throughout its 125 year history. The benefits of schooling in the open air were often extolled in the pages of National Education in the early 20th century. A 1935 report commented on the ‘remarkable and complete freedom from attacks of catarrh and colds which the children enjoyed’ by virtue of their experience of lessons in the open air.
